With a lifelong background in color through my art studies, I trusted my eyes over what I read in the early (and current) books on color and image. They are on the wrong track, so they do not work consistently. Without consistency, credibility in the whole field of image consulting is undermined. As the brilliant art educator Johannes Itten noted in his book The Elements of Color (1961), “Well-disciplined color thinking and a knowledge of the potentialities of colors are necessary to save us from the one-sidedness and error of coloration informed by taste alone.”
Itten has often been misquoted by image consultant as saying that his students knew intuitively whether they looked better in cool or warm colors. What he actually said was, “they paint their complementary colors, or combinations in commercial vogue, instead of reflecting themselves.”
Color is about “impression” on the one hand, and the results in the mirror on the other. The “art” of color is the successful intertwining and application of both. Joahannes Itten put it perfectly when he said, "We can be released from subjective bondage only through knowledge and awareness of objective principles." Color is the cornerstone of image consulting, and it is necessary to master color at all levels in order to be a total image consultant.
One basic truth about color is that SKIN trumps hair and eye color when determining your correct color category. Hair does not get dark circles, furrows or other “lumps and bumps” associated with aging, nor do the pupils of the eye. Skin does. There are many other truths about color awaiting you in this course which will enable you to become a Master of Color and a certified Total Image Consultant.
